Dan died on Friday, and I am heartbroken.
I will always remember his positivity and eternal beginner’s mind. Despite his status and fame, Dan liked to engage with anyone: excitement was all the qualification you needed.
Computer nerds are stereotypically prone to missing the forest for the trees, but Dan paid a lot of attention to the big picture, the social mechanisms by which communities function; and he acted accordingly, acknowledging the attention he received when he was young, and paying it forward.
It’s a huge loss, but I take solace in the fact that our last conversation was a good one, ranging from computational biochemistry for SARS-CoV-2 to memes about Google's toilet shortage. The scientific parts of that conversation I will transcribe on my next post.
